Mahj on the Beach was created to bring people together through the joy of American Mahjong. We believe that learning to play should be more than just picking up a game—it’s about building community, strengthening friendships, and creating lasting connections. Whether you're brand new or rediscovering the game, there's always room at our table.

Founder Kari Long’s Story

My Mahjong story started with a lesson with friends that quickly became an obsession, when Kate Dot Bham taught me my very first hand. I didn’t know it then, but that moment sparked a lifelong love of the game.

As a busy mom and reading teacher, Mahjong became a source of connection and camaraderie between friends and neighbors—something that I could enjoy between soccer games, in between plan periods at school, and even on the beach with my kids. It brought laughter, friendship, and a little ambiance to my every day life. I love how mahjong is almost ceremonial- you get the mat, tiles, pushers…do a charleston, curtsey…and everything is made to be "kind of a big deal*. It is the extra hospitality, community and connection that makes mahjong so special.

When we moved to Boca Raton, I saw a need for someone to share this beautiful game. That’s why I created Mahj on the Beach—to teach American Mahjong and help others experience the joy and community that comes with every hand played.
